How to Trust Your Gut: A Practical Guide for the Healing Space

Your gut has been trying to tell you something. Here's why you've been trained to ignore it — and how to start listening again.

You've felt it before. A practitioner says something that doesn't quite land right. A session ends and you feel vaguely worse, not better. A healer's explanation sounds plausible but something in you keeps pulling back.

And then you override it.

You tell yourself you're being too skeptical. That healing is supposed to feel uncomfortable. That you don't have enough experience to judge. That this person has credentials and testimonials and a waiting list, so surely you must be wrong.

This is one of the most common and most costly patterns in the wellness space: the systematic override of your own inner signal in favor of someone else's authority.

This post is about how to stop doing that.

Why We Override Our Gut in Healing Contexts

Before we talk about how to trust your intuition, it's worth understanding why we don't — especially in healing and spiritual contexts, where the override tends to be most pronounced.

The vulnerability factor. People come to healers when they're struggling. Pain, grief, confusion, burnout — these states lower our defenses and increase our willingness to defer to someone who seems to have answers. The more desperate the need, the more we want to believe, and the more we suppress the part of us that has doubts.

The authority gradient. Wellness culture has its own version of credentialism. Certifications, lineages, years of practice, testimonials, social media followings — all of these create an authority gradient that makes clients feel unqualified to question what they're experiencing. "Who am I to doubt someone with 20 years of experience?"

The spiritual bypass. In many healing communities, skepticism is framed as a spiritual problem. Doubt is "resistance." Discomfort is "the work." Questioning a practitioner is "not trusting the process." This framing is extraordinarily effective at silencing the inner voice — because it reframes your self-protective instincts as something you need to heal from.

The sunk cost. Once you've paid for a package, invested months in a relationship, or publicly committed to a healing path, the psychological cost of admitting it isn't working becomes very high. Your gut says leave. Your ego says you've come too far.

Understanding these dynamics doesn't make you cynical. It makes you a more conscious client.

What Gut Instinct Actually Is

There's a tendency in wellness culture to mystify intuition — to treat it as a spiritual gift, a psychic faculty, or something you either have or you don't. This framing, while poetic, is not particularly useful.

A more grounded understanding: your gut is a rapid-processing system that integrates information your conscious mind hasn't caught up with yet.

When something feels off, it's because your nervous system has registered an inconsistency — between what someone is saying and how they're saying it, between the story they're telling and the evidence in front of you, between the energy in the room and the words being spoken. You don't always know what the inconsistency is. You just know something doesn't add up.

This is not mystical. It is pattern recognition operating below the threshold of conscious awareness. And it is often right before your analytical mind has assembled the argument.

The problem isn't that your gut is unreliable. The problem is that we've been taught to distrust it — especially when it conflicts with someone else's authority.

The Difference Between Gut Instinct and Anxiety

One of the most common questions I hear: How do I know if I'm picking up on something real, or if I'm just anxious?

This is a genuinely important question, and the honest answer is: it takes practice to tell the difference. But there are some useful distinctions.

Gut instinct tends to be quiet, steady, and persistent — it returns even after reassurance, and it points toward something specific. Anxiety tends to be loud, urgent, and spiraling — it generalizes, catastrophizes, and can be temporarily soothed by reassurance.

Anxiety says: everything might be wrong. Gut instinct says: this specific thing is wrong.

Anxiety is diffuse. Intuition is pointed.

Neither is infallible. But learning to distinguish between them is one of the most valuable skills you can develop as someone navigating the healing space.

Four Practices for Rebuilding Your Inner Signal

If you've spent years overriding your gut, it doesn't come back overnight. But it does come back. Here are four practices that help.

### 1. Create Space Before You Respond

One of the most effective ways practitioners — well-meaning or otherwise — override client intuition is through immediacy. The session ends, the offer is made, the follow-up question is asked, and you're expected to respond now. In that pressured moment, the analytical mind hasn't had time to process, and the gut signal gets buried under the urgency to be polite, to be decisive, to not disappoint.

The simplest counter-practice: build in a pause. "I need to sit with this before I respond." "Let me think about it and get back to you." "I don't make decisions in the moment." These are not rude. They are sane. Any practitioner who pressures you to decide immediately is not respecting your process.

### 2. Write It Down Immediately After Sessions

Your gut speaks most clearly in the first few minutes after an experience, before the analytical mind has had time to rationalize what happened. Develop the habit of writing — even just a few sentences — immediately after a session. Not a polished reflection. Just: What did I notice? What felt off? What felt good? What am I telling myself to ignore?

Over time, these notes become a record of your inner signal. You'll start to see patterns. You'll notice which things you wrote down and then talked yourself out of — and whether you were right to do so.

### 3. Practice on Low-Stakes Decisions

Intuition is a muscle. If you only try to access it in high-stakes, emotionally charged situations, you're attempting a deadlift before you've learned to squat. Practice on small things. Which route do you want to take? Which option feels more aligned, even if you can't explain why? Which person in the room do you feel drawn to or cautious about?

The goal isn't to make every decision intuitively. The goal is to keep the channel open — to stay in the habit of checking in with yourself, so that when it matters, the signal is easier to hear.

### 4. Notice What You're Telling Yourself to Ignore

This is perhaps the most important practice. Pay attention to the sentences that begin with "I know this sounds weird, but..." or "I'm probably just being paranoid, but..." or "I don't want to be unfair, but..."

Those sentences are almost always your gut speaking. The qualifier at the beginning is the override in action — the part of you that has already decided to dismiss what comes next before it's even been said.

Start finishing those sentences. Write them down. Take them seriously. You don't have to act on every one of them. But you do have to stop training yourself to silence them before they're even heard.

When Your Gut Is Telling You to Leave

Sometimes the question isn't how to hear your gut — it's how to act on what it's already telling you clearly.

Leaving a healing relationship is harder than it sounds. There's often genuine affection involved. There may be a sense of obligation, especially if the practitioner has invested time in you. There may be fear — of being wrong, of hurting someone's feelings, of not finding something better.

Here is what I want you to know: you do not owe any practitioner your continued presence.

You are not obligated to explain yourself. You are not obligated to give feedback. You are not obligated to stay through a package you've already paid for if the relationship no longer feels right. You can simply stop booking.

If you want to say something, you can keep it brief and clean: "I've decided to take a break from sessions for now. Thank you for the work we've done together." That's it. You don't owe a detailed explanation. You don't owe them the chance to talk you out of it.

Your gut said leave. That's enough.

A Note on Getting It Wrong

You will sometimes trust your gut and be wrong. You will leave a practitioner who was actually good for you. You will stay suspicious of someone who was genuinely trying to help. You will misread a situation.

This is not a reason to stop trusting yourself. It is a reason to hold your intuition lightly — as information, not as infallible truth. The goal is not to be right every time. The goal is to stay in relationship with your own inner signal, to keep refining it, to keep taking it seriously even when it's inconvenient.

The alternative — systematically overriding your gut in favor of someone else's authority — has a much worse track record.

The Bottom Line

Your intuition is not a spiritual gift reserved for the especially enlightened. It is a basic human faculty that has been systematically undermined by a culture that rewards deference and pathologizes doubt.

In the healing space, where the stakes are high and the regulation is low, learning to hear and trust your own inner signal is not optional. It is the most important skill you can develop.

Start small. Write things down. Create pauses. Finish the sentences you've been trained to abandon.

Your gut has been trying to tell you something. It's time to start listening.
